The European Union needs Britain and Britain needs the European Union

Our continent faces threats unparalleled since the end of World War Two.

Russian and American expansionism and other hostile activity (respectively in Ukraine [and Western Europe] and with regard to Greenland [and Canada and elsewhere]) threaten us, our economy and our security.

Trump’s Greenland threats placed US allies and military in an impossible position

‘Closest target’: Why is Donald Trump so focused on Canada?

It is therefore crucial that we establish the closest possible relationship with the rest of our continent.

In the face of an increasingly unstable world, our continent needs unity, not division.

We therefore appeal to all our members and supporters to urgently write to the Prime Minister, urging him to re-establish much closer links and shared strategies with EU nations by doing the following five things:

With America’s continuing support for NATO in doubt, the UK must play a much greater role in building up our continent's ability to defend itself. That is the best guarantee of peace and security. Brexit can no longer be allowed to compromise our security. We should not forget that the only world leaders that were, without doubt, delighted by the UK's departure from the EU were Putin and Trump.

Trump backed Brexit. Then he used it as leverage

The government must help reinvigorate the UK economy by re-joining the European Single Market. Leaving it has cost the UK’s economy more than £90 billion per year in lost trade etc (and reduces trade-related and corporate tax revenues by £250 million per day, thus pushing up taxes for ordinary people). That Brexit-induced economic self-harm must stop. A strengthened economy will enhance our ability to defend our country and our continent.

Britain must work with our continental European allies to establish an International Alliance to reinvigorate and protect the United Nations and the international rules-based order. Such an initiative is crucial because Russian and American actions and strategies are increasingly violating international law and deliberately undermining the United Nations and other international bodies. Our country and our continent’s future security and prosperity are seriously threatened by the instability and increased conflict caused by the ongoing destruction of the international rules-based order (the system that has helped maintain relative peace for most of the post-World-War-Two era).

The UK government should launch a public information initiative to explain and promote the crucial importance of European and other international cooperation and unity for the security and the economy of our country and our continent.

Like our continental European allies we should make additional efforts to establish much closer trading relationships with South America, India, Indonesia and other areas. We should also try to speed up our efforts to further increase our trade and cooperation with Turkey and the Arabian Gulf. Because we have sadly left the EU and because the USA is increasingly an unreliable partner, expanding global trade and cooperation is essential for Britain's prosperity and security.
